Well, we’ve been to museums, the aquarium, the planetarium, the zoo, to the Alliance Française, and to so many other places, and the stories have always featured some of the same characters, so if this woman isn’t telling the truth, she should be a novelist. Now, am I saying all this because Madeleine Loveliness makes this city splendid, or is the city splendid in itself? For that answer you would have to go with us on a long ramble through the Magi Collines, that part of town whose houses flow under broad tree-lined streets with Japanese lanterns hung across the gates. If the six or seven hours you spend with us doesn’t both exhilarate you, and burn you to a crisp; and if when I call you at 6 the next evening with another of her proposals, then you won’t know why I say, “This city of cities always rises.”
