My Week Finding Work

Manpower: Exploring the World of Virtual Work ...

My main mission this past week was to find a job. Once again, I was either overqualified, under qualified, had too little experience, or could find no open positions. I tried food service, but I lacked the experience necessary. I tried offices, but there are literally no office jobs available at this time. I tried temporary agencies, but they told me they had a lack of positions available. I am a 20 year old undergraduate student with perfect school and work history. I have a 3.9 GPA. After struggling to get air-conditioned office jobs or upscale food service jobs, I decided to apply at local fast food chains. So far, the fast food managers have been the nicest out of all other fields. I applied at a customer service center with an outstanding business reputation, but I could tell from the second I applied that they were not so outstanding to their employees. Everyone in the center looked miserable, the HR staff was outrageously rude to every applicant, and they required a million tests, questions, interviews, checks, references, credit history reports, etc. After I passed all of the tests, made 100 WPM on my typing test, and proved I was not an imbecile, they said, “We’ll call you.” Well… I’m still waiting to hear from them, but until then, I’ll keep trying fast food. I’ll be the best drive-thru operator in town!

Pork Bun Goodness

December 26th, 2009

I grew up about an hour from Chinatown in San Francisco. My parents used to take my siblings and me to lunch there on Sundays. Sometimes we’d eat at a dim sum restaurant, and sometimes we’d go to a Chinese bakery. The bakery is where I discovered my favorite food: Steamed pork buns. The outside is slightly gummy and sweet. This inside is delicious barbecued pork. The flavor of the pork is similar to the taste a Chinese barbecue spare rib. They’re served warm, and they’re tasty as all get-out! When I moved away from California, I couldn’t find a taste comparable to that pork bun–until last night. I found a Chinese grocery store in Greenville, SC that sells frozen pork buns. You steam them yourself, and the taste is as sweet and gummy as I remember from my childhood. Mmmmm….

My constant, but ever-changing, day to day life

LAS VEGAS - JANUARY 10: Adam White plays Guit...

Though when I wake up tends to change daily as I have insomnia, and sometimes do not get to sleep until after 10 am, my basic, day to day life stays the same. I usually spend the first hour or so playing games on my computer to help me wake up, followed by a half an hour of yoga and a quick shower. If it’s one of the rare days that I wake up in the am, I’ll watch TV or play my computer until my husband wakes up, around 2pm. If it’s one of my normal days, where I wake up around 6pm, the shower is followed by housework. Depending on if it’s still open; I’ll head to the store since we seem to always be out of something. Then depending on what I feel like that day, I either go back to playing games or I write for a bit. At midnight, I turn on the porch light for my husband and start making dinner, which we eat at the dining room table while he tells me how his day at work was. The, depending on when I had gotten up, I either go to bed or watch some of the shows I have on DVD until I crash.
