Waiting in line at airport security and to get on the plane are not my favorite things, not to mention waiting to get off the plane. Once I got to my destination hotel, I put on the exercise shoes, but went to the fitness center treadmill rather than to the hot surrounding sidewalks. There would be plenty of time to explore the area and there were even some scheduled trips to a museum and to a rooftop terrace for a Saturday evening reception. What came back to me quickly are the parts about traveling that I like: figuring out how to use the city’s subway system; reading maps and orienting myself; meeting new people; and collapsing life down to a suitcase, a laptop and a cell phone. Getting up early to catch the first flight home was something I learned also. What a pleasure it was to get home well before noon on a Sunday morning and have the whole day to catch up.

What Type of Dog Collar is Right for You?

October 29th, 2009

There are many types of stylish dog collars which serve many different purposes.  For training, many people choose to use a choke chain. This is a chain which forms a loop around the dog’s neck which tightens as it is pulled. These are very good for training purposes as it lets the dog feel your control and authority over him. However, a choke chain should never be left on a dog as he is running about without a leash, as the end could get caught and hang him or choke him to death. If you need a collar to leave on your dog at all times, as to display his tags, there are many colorful styles to choose from. For larger dogs, a metal clasp as on a belt is best. For smaller dogs which are less likely to pull at their collar there are plastic clasps available. The plastic clasp is easier to buckle and unbuckle, but break fairly easily if pulled on by a larger breed of dog. There are many different options available for dog collars if you are a new or existing dog owner. The best suggestion is to pick a dog collar that is best suited for your dog. Do you need a collar for fashion? For control? Or for training? These are the questions you must ask yourself before you begin the search for the collar. If you are after a collar for fashion, there are many choices available. You can pick your choice of color, pattern, style, and materials. Some owners choose to use a bandana for fashion instead of a collar, but this does limit the ability to use a leash. The most common use for a dog collar is for training or control. Make sure that if you are using a collar for this purpose that you choose one that appropriately fits your dog. If it is too small it could cause your dog trouble breathing. If it is too large, your dog could slip out of it. Finally, no matter what reason you choose to put a collar on your dog, just make sure both you and your dog are happy with your choice.

Today is a Monday

When I walked into work this morning, the first words out of my mouth to a coworker were, “I can’t wait for Friday afternoon!” To understand that statement, I think I need a little background. The company I work for has slowly been declining, next to no pay rises for the last three years, continuing layoffs, and just recently a 10% pay cut. This has been pretty typical for some companies in the US as they have struggled in the economic slowdown. Well our big tradeshow of the year is right after Thanksgiving this year, and we had our quarterly Engineering priorities meeting last week. Unfortunately as is the nature of things when companies are teetering, things start to get weird, and this company is no exception. There tends to be a feeling of fear and not wanting to be the one to blame. Tempers tend to boil just below the surface. And since it’s the last week of the month, all eyes are on sales, will we make a profit this month, or how big will the loss be. And as the week starts, I wish it was Friday afternoon!

Dress your pup for bedtime!

October 26th, 2009

Recently I met a woman with a little Chihuahua. Well, I suppose all Chihuahuas are little! She had outfits for her pup to wear in the cold and rain. Then she began to look into small dog pajamas! If your pup is tiny, or has short hair, pajamas are actually worthwhile. It’s just like for people. We have separate outfits for bedtime and lounging to keep furniture and bedding clean – no one jumps in bed wearing their work clothes.  Fabrics used for dog pajamas can include synthetics and cotton. Because the dog’s body temperature is higher than humans, you don’t want them to get overheated. Pay attention to the fabric used, just like for your own clothing choices. Cotton is a good selection. It’s washable and most importantly it is a breathable fabric. If you’re creative and like to sew, you may find or make your own patterns. Your tiny pup will thank you for it!
